Going to The Palin Rally

Getting ready to remind the heckler that her son is over in Iraq fighting for the freedom that gives him the right to protest... moments later, he was escorted out of the arena

Acknowledging the Florida Gulf Coast University #1 ranked soccer team and our own Florida Everblades... she said, "I like that name!"

Near the end of the speech, getting ready to say farewell...

These are from after the speech when she came down to shake hands and sign autographs... I got both... a hand shake and she signed my McCain button.

And yes, guys she is just as hot in person!

Progress on our Home Addition

Last weekend... Aug 1 & 2 I continued the demo and new construction of phase 2. I completed the pvc drain and venting pipes for the relocated bathroom vanity and out relocated laundry rooom sink... I demolished the old shower pan, took out the old toilet... All the sheetrock between the laundry and the bath is gone...

I have started to convert all the old copper tubing into CPVC... eventually all homes in Cape Coral must be converted to CPVC is destroying the copper... expected life of copper here is only about 40 years...

Here are more pix... This is looking from our old bedroom (soon to be our expanded bathrooom) into the laundry expansion (closest to you on the picture).... back ground is the toilet location and shower.

This is from our laundry room door... looking past the studs into the shower location...

Standing in the shower looking over the toilet and into the expanded laundry area... drain pipes for the two bath sinks and laundry tub...

Ok... about 6 months have passed and after numerous requests, I am finally updating this posting...
We have moved from what I call phase 1 of the project.... our bedroom... into phase 2 is in the demo mode... pictures to follow...

Notice the dressing table I made for Janice, complete with a glass top table with sand and shells collected from the local beaches.

I made the bed from scratch... we have 6 large wicker baskets underneath to store "Linens N Things."

In phase two, I have framed out our new walk-in closet and our expanded bathroom... I have ripped most of the drywall out of the bathroom in order to investigate plumbing routing, etc. In this discovery phase, I found quite a bit of water damage... no biggie, seems as though our grout joints and window sill in the shower were leaking.... good time to fix that! One funny note... as I was removing the trim from the bathroom door, I discovered that the original installer of the door did not use one nail in the frame.... the only thing holding the door up was the trim... also, on the door jam itself, there was a name... Dave Dumas.... fitting name for no-nail Dave!

Anyway, enjoy the pix!

Hey, I give up on trying to outsmart this blog... I tried to keep in chronological from earliest to latest, going down the page... from here on out, latest entries are on top... I guess that is the whole purpose of blogs...

finally got the exterior door installed... the trials and tribulations on should be a subject of another blog... titled, Damn Home Depot... Damn them displaying items they do not stock... Damn me for taking a field measure on a door they do not stock... went somewhere else, spent triple the money but got a damn good door... bring on a hurricane, I dare ya!

Last blog showed the drywall progress... I have it all taped and mudded... not final touch yet but in order to get the scaffold out of the way, I need to run the bead board on the ceiling... the ceiling and the part where the ceiling hits the walls are all done. I have always hated finishing sheet rock... I think I am getting better... we'll see... at least I do not have to do it all like, how does Gordon say it??? El Perfecto!... the lower part of the wall will be covered with bead board like the ceiling... so only about 4 feet up from the floor and up to the ceiling needs to be El Perfecto... also, to cheat a bit, wherever a wall touches wall or ceiling, I am trimming out in rough sawn cedar for the "cottage" look... those joints will be hidden... the unknowing will figure it is for looks, not cover-up!!!

anywho, take a look at the latest photos...

Many of you ask us how is the addition coming along... bookmark sickelsinthecape.blogspot.com and watch the progress...

Before you view, I must say that none of this would have happened without the help of my true friend, Gordon Schweers... He is so meticulous and has taken on this job as if it were his own house he was working on... he certainly does know what he is doing... Also, thanks goes to Bryan Stork who helped out with the heavy part of framing... I gotta admit, he too, knows what he is doing.... He still freaks me out as he cuts the 2 X's on the Compound Miter saw with his arms crossed... left arm holding wood, the right one pulling the saw down... ouch... oh well, all arms are still intact!

Here is what the back yard looked like on December 10, 2007

My good friend Leo Marino brought his crew out and began digging the footers... 18" deep and 24" wide.... 7 yards of concrete...

We ordered up the concrete...

Once the concrete was set, I ordered the lumber for the 2X6 conventional framing with 2 X 8 rafters...

There is Gordon and Bryan trying to figure out what's next!

Once we got all the sticks stood up on end, we started the roof.

Then, the siding went up...

Here is the view from our Lanai after the siding went up...

This one month, 10 days after we broke ground

Here are the stucco guys doing a great job in matching the existing house.

They set their mortar mixer up in the driveway and had to wheel the mud right through the living and dining rooms!

Part of the project includes gutting our laundry room, our bathroom and expanding both... the laundry will take up 1/2 of our current bathroom... the other 1/2 of our bathroom will take up 1/2 of our current bedroom.... the left over part of our current bedroom will be a walk-in closet... we had to board up the window in our bedroom in order to accommodate...

Gordon and I built the framing so tight, we used a sledge hammer to get it in.....

Since my last update, we have made quite a bit of progress... One week ago, Tuesday evening when Maxwell was at Boy Scouts, Gordon, Ken Backstran and I went and picked up all the insulation... 2 days later, it was all installed... On Saturday, Home Depot delivered 32 sheets of Drywall... it took 31 sheets and three days to complete... Gordon helped me with the ceiling... also assisting were Janice and Maxwell... That is not a fun thing to put drywall on... Anyway after a lot of cussing and putting the 2nd sheet up, then down, then up, then down, Gordon and I headed off to Home Depot... There, Gordon picked up his latest addition to his arsenal... A Senco DuraTwist... kinda like a Gatling gun for drywall screws... certainly a time saver and really cool tool to watch in action... So, sometime in the early evening, Gordon and I got the ceiling complete and just about the entire west wall... On Monday, yours truly hung the north wall, the east wall and most of the south wall ALL BY MYSELF!!! Try that sometime... This morning, Tuesday, one week after I picked up the insulation, drywall is 99% complete... see pix below...
